Definition: The word "comix" came about from the underground and alternative comic book world that started in the sixties in San Francisco, CA. These comic books were nothing like the Marvel or DC counterparts, which were light hearted and action packed. No, these comic books were about adult themes, political viewpoints, diary motifs, and psychedelic mindsets. To differentiate these types of books from other comic books, an "X" was added to the end of "comic" changing it to "comix". This "X" was also used to show that it often had X-rated material.
These kinds of comic books are still in production, but more and more publishers are starting to use the phrase for many if not all of the independent comic books. Whether they have adult themes or not will most likely be posted on the back cover.
Pronunciation: kom-icks
Also Known As: undergound comics, alternative comics
Examples: I like to read really alternative comix these days, not like when I was a kid and read comic books.
