The Big Two

By Aaron Albert, About.com

Definition: The term, "The Big Two," is in reference to the two major comic book companies, Marvel Comics and DC Comics. There are many reasons why they are referred to as "big." One of the reasons is that Marvel and DC make up eighty to ninety percent of the total market share of comic books sold. Another reason is that they have survived decades of competition to become the most solid of the comic book companies. They also have a huge stable of characters, which have garnished enormous amounts of success both financially and with the fans.

Marvel and DC are the big dogs of the comic book world and have secured their place in the history of comic books.
